Hotel Oloffson

Hotel Oloffson is an Inn in the center of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Built at the end of the 19th century as a private residence, it was transformed into a hotel in 1935, and became known for its many artists and celebrities who have stayed there. It is a gingerbread gothic palace with a tropical garden. Demosthenes Simon Sam, built it, was the son of the president of Haiti Tiresias Simon Sam from 1896 to 1902. The Sams lived in the palace until 1915. Roger Coster, a french photographer, rents the hotel. The hotel became known as the “Greenwich Village of the Tropics”, attracting actors, writers and artists.

Kokoye Beach, Petit Goave

Kokoye Beach is Haiti’s most relaxing beach located in the third municipal section of the city of Petit-Goâve. Difficult to reach, but worth it. Basically two options: by boat from Petit Goâve or on foot. The tourist can choose the boat, organized by the Fort Royal Hotel. The tour includes a picnic – practically transported and heated there. However, there are restaurants on the beach and you can order food there which is probably better. When I went it was a weekday and there were no other visitors. Some reasonable dives around the rocky outcrops. Kokoye Beach is a must for anyone in Haiti. The beach is very clean with beautiful clear waters and white sand. There is also a really cool cave you can swim in if you swim around the east side point.
