Music: Bahamian music developed a distinctive identity called Goombay music. This early style of music was typical for both song and dance. The derivation of the name is from an African drum called ‘goom-ba’, a membranophone made with goat skin and played with the hands.

Licensed taxis are reliable and safe. The fares are regulated by the government. You can call various cab or driver companies from your hotel, restaurants, etc.

Domestic Flights:

Bahamasair operates few domestic routes. Several charter services also run inter-island flights.


Bahamas Ferries operates between Nassau, Harbour Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Andros and Abaco.

Public Transportation:

Local coaches operate on the bigger islands of the Bahamas. The smaller islands do not have public transportation.

Bahamas national airline is Bahamasair. Airlines operating direct flights from the USA to the Bahamas include Delta and JetBlue. Silver Airways connects Fort Lauderdale with Bimini. British Airways flies to Nassau from the UK.

A large number of international cruise ships call at Nassau and Freeport. Various ferry operators run regular services between Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Freeport, Grand Bahama. There are services between Miami, Florida and Bimini. Travellers can also arrive by private boat to the Bahamas.

Recorded history began in 1492, when Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Guanahani, which he renamed San Salvador Island, on his first voyage to the New World. The earliest permanent European settlement was in 1648 on Eleuthera. During the 18th century slave trade, many Africans were brought to the Bahamas as slaves to work unpaid. Their descendants now constitute 85% of the Bahamian population.
