Punda, Willemstad

For those who want to explore the towns, head to the Punda neighborhood of Willemstad. You’ll get to stroll around the Dutch colonial architecture with its pedestrian-only streets, brightly painted walls, be near the water, and pop in and out of local restaurants and shops. You just might find that perfect souvenir to take home!

Beaches

Curaçao is famous for its beautiful beaches such as Blue Bay Beach, Cas Abao Beach and Seaquarium Beach. However, a trip to Curaçao would be amiss without a day spent on Mambo Beach.

This fun beach with its turquoise blue waters and warm, sugar-white sand is just a short drive south of the capital Willemstad. You can rent chairs, a cabana, and enjoy a variety of shops and restaurants within easy walking distance.

It’s a great beach destination if you’re looking for something in the middle of it all.

Culture/Events

Curacao’s culture has been infused with traditions from many nationalities which have all played a role in the customs and traditions observed. Most notably, of course, is the Dutch influence as Curacao is a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Then of course there is the Latin American and African influence. The native language Papiamento is believed to have an Afro-Portuguese base.

Curacao is home to arguably the best nightlife in the Dutch Caribbean Islands group. The weekends are never ending as bars and dance clubs come to life and welcome all who appear at their doorstep. You’ll get to mingle with locals, indulge in the atmosphere of fun, and make memories to last.

If you plan to travel in September before going back to school, chances are your travels will line up perfectly with the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival. You’ll get to enjoy the sultry notes as you dance the night away.

Lime & Dine

“The food scene in Cuba is usually a bargain, with some pricey eat outs here and there. The island has a long list of worth a while menus and we have compiled a few below for your next trip:

  1. El Café in Havana: The name may have given it away, yes this place is your best place for an amazing breakfast. There is no sign to the café so you will have to trust your nose to follow the coffee beans and bacon aroma. Get a bowl of granola, toasted sarnies or a full on eggs, bacon, bread, cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers plate. Imagine taking your favourite breakfast joint on holiday with you? That is El Café.
  2. Casa Miglis: if you are like most people, then you probably have no idea what Swedish-Cuban fusion food is. But Casa sure does and so will you if you visit this quirky exotic restaurant. The owner, a Swedish music video director, had an art fest with the décor where the stage is made of old Coca Cola ads.
  3. El Cocinero: so if you are looking for a sleek, elegant and of course it will be pricey Cuban restaurant, then El Cocinero is your guy. The restaurant is described as “loft-like” and has a rooftop terrace in a former cooking oil factory alongside an art gallery and nightclub. You can expect dishes like Tuna carpaccio and duck blinis.

Water Activities

Avian lovers will delight in the Flamingo Sanctuary located near Sint Willibrordus. The flamingos are in their natural habitat and you can view them from the shores as they enjoy grazing in the water. It’s recommended that you wear waterproof shoes, just in case!

For those who are looking to get a little bit closer to nature, you can sign up for a Standing Paddle Board Tour. You’ll get to travel through mangrove forests, travel along the shore, and even enjoy riding some smaller waves as you journey through the beauty of Curaçao.The adventurers out there who want to try something new should consider signing up with Aquafari Tour. These underwater tours equip you with a helmet linked to an oxygen supply and an underwater scooter to propel you around underwater. You won’t need a SCUBA certification to experience the beauty that comes with diving.
