History:
By 1526, the Cayman Islands were inhabited and the name was derived from the Carib word for the marine crocodile which once lived on the islands. Hence the word remained and the addition of “islands” soon followed. But during the 1700’s a wide variety of inhabitants including pirates, refugees from the Spanish inquisitions, shipwrecked sailors, and slaves soon settled on the islands. Little Cayman and Cayman Brac were the first recorded settlements in the Caymans between 1833 and 1840.
During this time we saw new settlements like East End and Bodden Town being established. Nonetheless, throughout the centuries the Cayman Islands has developed a reputation as the “Islands that Time Forgot.” Due to the islands being isolated for much of the time that they would have been inhabited. Compared to other Caribbean islands around the region, they were not known for much harvesting and trade among the British Empire.
Although the islands were known for their arduous way of life where the inhabitants relied primarily on fishing, cutting wood, sailing, farming, and catching turtles.
Fast forward to the last half-century the Cayman Islands has made a remarkable transformation through technology and becoming one of the global banking centers in the world. In addition to becoming one of the primary luxury destinations, the islands also hold one of the strongest GDP in the world.
