Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to the Unites States, has been recognized by the UN decolonization committee as a colonial case. Its people have been involved in a long fight in order to be recognized as independent. It is an archipelago formed by a large principal island and other smaller but beautiful ones. To the South, it limits to the Caribbean Sea, to the North with the Atlantic Ocean, to the east to the Virginia Passage and to the west to the Mona Pass. San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico. It is well known for its beautiful white sand beaches with calm crystal-clear waters. The center of island, its landscape changes to mountains and tropical forest. Because of its divergent landscapes, lots of different activities can be done in Puerto Rico during the entire year.

Culture/Events

Puerto Rico’s musical taste springs from the Taino people. Their music borrows the Caribbean tune that was played on handmade instruments such as the mayohuacán, a wooden slit drum.

  • The guiro is another traditional Puerto Rican instrument played by the Taino people. It is a percussive instrument made from a hollowed gourd.
  • Other music traditions reached Puerto through interaction with Spanish and African cultures.
  • These new inhabitants came in with varied instruments, like guitars with varying levels of strings. Puerto Rican Cuatro, which has 10 strings! is the most iconic amongst all the musical equipment.
