The day after Christmas, often known as Boxing Day, Maskanoo comes alive and is the largest yearly festival in the Turks & Caicos Islands. It is a celebration of the illustrious past and distinctive culture of the Islands. It originated from slaves enjoying Christmas in the 19th century by making fun of the affluent people’s costume balls, and it is now a cultural festival of the island’s West African and Caribbean roots. Junkanoo and “Mas,” or Carnival, are combined to form Maskanoo. The event takes place in Grace Bay on the island of Providenciales and features live music, the sounds of cowbells and partygoers rushing, cultural activities, and merchants selling genuine local fare and beverages. The night comes to a stunning conclusion with fireworks.
