St. Thomas Carnival 2020 Complete Planning Guide

St. Thomas Carnival 2020 Goes Virtual With Home Wuk

To keep alive the spirit of the community amidst social isolation The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism’s Division of Festivals launched “Home Wuk”. This is a series of online events hosted by the islands in response to the postponements of events on St. Thomas due to the coronavirus pandemic. The idea is ‘to create a sense of community, camaraderie and a ‘virtual’ carnival experience.’

The events premiered in line with the annual USVI Carnival celebrations, which were to take place from April 3 to May 4, 2020. Caribbean events are a major part of the islands’ culture and tradition, with many people looking forward to the celebrations every year. This year was no different. The postponement of events created much disappointment among the Caribbean zealots. In efforts to mitigate the impact of the unfortunate circumstances, the government of USVI took their events online.

In his statement, Ian Turnbull, director of the Division of Festivals said, “We know everyone was looking forward to Carnival, but postponing it was the right thing to do to make sure we help stop the virus from spreading. With the ‘Home Wuk’ series, we can lift people’s spirits and bring the VI Carnival vibe to everyone in the safety of their homes.”

The first event in the “Home Wuk” series went live on 28th March 2020, which was an online party hosted by the “Caribbean’s hottest DJ Avalanche” in collaboration with Insomniacs J’ouvert Troupe, Blueprint Promotions & MDM.  The event went live on USVI Festival’s Facebook Page and attracted a huge number of people, with more than 75,000 online views and around 1400 shares. During the two hours long online party, people enjoyed listening to the ‘feel-good’ music from the Virgin Islands and cheered on from the comfort of their homes.

While online events are a healthy distraction, they cannot replace the experience of attending in person. But there’s still hope as the Tourism Division shared plans for rescheduling the Carnival, once the crisis is averted and it’s safe to host public gatherings again.

The details of upcoming events can be found on the USVI Festivals official website. Join online on Wednesday, 22 April 2020 at 3 pm EST for Zumba- Carnival Fitness with Gaynel Harris. The virtual fitness event will go live on the USVI Festivals Facebook page and website. Next in line is a replay of the 2017 Children’s Parade which will be held on April 24. Follow the party on Facebook at 2 pm EST and reminisce the good old times.

St. Thomas Carnival 2020 Dates – April 4, 2020 – May 2, 2020

For those who want to experience the vibrancy and beauty of the Caribbean, pack your bags and head to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands! From April 4th to May 2nd , the island will come to life with music, dancing, festivities, and good cooking.

Carnival on St. Thomas started as a massive conglomeration of religious and cultural festivals of both the European settlers and the African slaves. With many festivities occurring in early spring, as time went on, the festivals began to blur together.

Today, Carnival blends together some of the traditional European and vibrant African dancing styles, livens with energetic African music and traditional dress, and the fusion cuisine of the Caribbean. With so many cultures blending together into one joyous celebration, there is something for everybody at V.I. Carnival.

The month-long festivities start off with a variety of pageants and performances, to awaken the island. As the month continues, the party truly revs up.

Locals take to the streets in parades, dances, and shows, such as the Calypso competitions and the steelpan concerts. The Food Fair takes over Emancipation Garden in Charlotte Amalie, showcasing the island’s many delicious and unique flavors. And to cap off the month, the streets are blocked off for the Children’s Parade and the Adult’s Parade.

With a stunning fireworks display, over the entire island, to fully welcome the spring and summer.
