Coquito
What is coquito?
Coquito is a traditional Puerto Rican cold beverage. It is made with Coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Coquito is a Spanish word that means “little coconuts” and it is traditionally served during the Christmas season to celebrate the holiday.
It’s a delicious cocktail that’s ideal for a holiday gathering with friends and family. If you like creamy drinks, you’ll enjoy your coquito.
Is coquito similar to eggnog?
Coquito and eggnog are both delightful holiday beverages with a milky and creamy texture. While they may appear similar, coquito and eggnog are completely different drinks.
Coquito is a rum-based Puerto Rican alcoholic beverage made from coconut milk. It is popular during the Christmas season and is found in many Latin American countries like Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
Eggnog is an American beverage that contains rum as well, but it is made with eggs and cream or milk rather than coconut milk. The drink first appeared in America in the late 17th century, where it was made with equal parts rum, sugar, milk, and beaten eggs but over time, only egg whites were used instead of egg yolks. Then it became a holiday beverage.
How to make coquito?
Making coquito is simple and fun; first, gather all of the ingredients. Then, simply follow the steps to make the perfect shake or cocktail. Finally, relax and enjoy your delicious creation.
Ingredients
- 1 can of cream coconut.
- 1 can of coconut milk.
- 1 can of evaporated milk.
- 1 can of sweetened condensed milk.
- ½ tsp. ground nutmeg (freshly grated).
- ½ tsp. fresh ground cinnamon.
- 2 tsp. vanilla, or 1 vanilla bean, split and seeded.
- 1 cup of Puerto Rico rum.
- ground cinnamon and cinnamon stick.
Method
First, Blend the coconut cream, evaporated milk, coconut milk, and condensed milk until smooth.
Then add in the nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Blend once more. These are more to taste; if you think they need more, add more until you’re satisfied with the flavor.
You can stop here if you don’t want the alcohol or want to serve it to children.
If you want it with alcohol, simply add the rum.
Refrigerate it in a container or bottle for 4 to 6 hours; the longer you leave it, the more concentrated the flavors will be. Then, to finish the flavor, sprinkle with cinnamon.
How long does coquito last?
Coquito without rum will not last as long as coquito with rum; without rum, coquito will only last for a few days in the refrigerator, whereas coquito with rum can last up to 2 months.
Can you make a vegan version of coquito?
Absolutely! If you are vegan and still want to enjoy this delicious drink during the holidays, the good news is that you can make coquito vegan-style by replacing dairy with coconut products.
You can combine a can of coconut milk, a can of sweetened condensed coconut milk, a can of evaporated coconut milk, a can of coconut cream, cinnamon, vanilla extract, grated nutmeg, and rum in a blender and chill in the refrigerator.
Serve your delicious vegan coquito with vegan whipped cream and cinnamon sprinkles.
