As the New Year has rolled over Curacao is all set to host its Tumba Festival from January 23 – 27, 2023 at the Curaçao Festival Center, Willemstad, Curacao.
About Tumba Festival
The Tumba Festival is one of the largest musical events in Curaçao and the main highlight event of the Curaçao Carnival which will be held in February. During the Tumba Festival, numerous artists compete to win the coveted title of Rei di Tumba (Tumba King/Queen) and make their Tumba (song) the official anthem of this year’s Carnival.
Curaçao Carnival History
Curaçao’s Carnival is one of the largest and longest-lasting Carnival spectacles in the Caribbean. The Curaçao Carnival celebration was an initiative of several Venezuelan citizens who lived here temporarily. The festivities took place in a private elite club, according to “De Curaçaosche Courant” in 1901.
Oral History Sources indicate that “The Jolly Fellows Society” was considered the driving force behind the development of celebrating carnival on the streets for the first time in 1947.
